What has gone wrong recently is that imported slates produced from inherently less strong rocks are split to traditional British thicknesses of around 5mm. The consequence is that on a roof the thinnest slates as part of a consignment break during the first winter. These don?t all break of course considering within the range of thicknesses in a consignment some; definitely most; will really become stiff plenty of. But this really is zero comfort when five per cent to an innovative new roof are lying in the ground; even if they did not hit you in the way down.
